Designing a galley kitchen to be efficient and functional requires a little planning. Galley kitchens are in one straight line with barely enough space for two people to walk past one another. Knowing this, how do you best use the space that you have available? Read on to learn how Ludi Szabo and his clients collaborated with this design to make the most of a small space…
These days, most new home owners want a combination of both gas and electric hobs. A hood is vital in a small kitchen, a must have, as it sucks up the humidity and the heat in the kitchen keeping the temperature in the kitchen lower.
“When designing a small kitchen it is crucial to make use of the hard to reach spaces using shelving that reaches quite high up. A solution is to use a step stool that is easy to store without taking up much space. A little closet designed with this in mind works wonders or fit the step stool underneath a counter, as you prefer.
Arrange your kitchen based on what you cook regularly and make sure that you have all that you need, close at hand. “Cooking is a pleasure if you just need to reach into a drawer or shelf to get what you need. It is a drag when you are running back and forth to different spots in your kitchen to pick things up that you need, just to get something done,” says Ludi. “And when you get back to the stove, something has burnt.”
If you are still in the designing stages of your galley kitchen, bear in mind that the sink is not the focal point of your kitchen. “So, positioning your sink at the end of a galley kitchen works best as it frees up counter space for preparation, specifically opposite the hob and oven” explains Ludi “since preparation space is the most coveted space in a galley kitchen where items are stacked one upon the other just to make space”.
One side of the galley kitchen must be used exclusively for cooking and the other side must be open areas for food preparation. “The ideal is to have the stove in the middle on one side, with all the appliances at hand” explained Ludi, “and on the other side, there is sufficient space for two people to be cooking in the kitchen at the same time, which is not always possible in a galley kitchen.

It is wise to spread the appliances along the length of one side of the galley kitchen. Having a refrigerator and stove or dishwasher positioned next to one another is never a great idea with the way they open their doors. “Design preparation areas next to the refrigerator and keep it away from heat producing appliances,’ stated Ludi “and keep the stove away from windows as it affects the temperature.
If you are in the planning/designing stage, bear in mind the lighting in the space as it is. Natural light from windows or glass doors do make a difference – however, will this be enough light?
